The Top Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Number One Spot.

Initially, this work may look closer to an arduous academic examination rather than a new pop project by an artist who just had a last single featured an international pop star. Broken into 4 separate parts and voiced in 13 languages, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work that delves into female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, frequently via the lens of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive list of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the work of other artists appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, and complete credit belonging to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds and the present, the scale are much higher here, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. What really raises this fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk during her height, you find a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls you into its tornado. When she's breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly on a stunning Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top string surge thuds in like cartoonish impact. The song immediately segues to the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux lies in you rarely quite know—or even wish to predict—where it will go to next."

Nearly every song ends at a completely distinct place than how it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate symphony only to collapsing into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style starts off moody and brooding, with prowling beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves straddling the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to gather more and more infectious melodies while it spirals upward. That feat gets echoed on a different powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried gems that requires patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While some big pop albums of the year felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the characters around the table, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
