The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
